Hands-On Novice Contest Workshop
The world of competition pet styling can be a daunting one. While there are many potential contestants out there, there are few avenues for them to follow on finding information on how to get started. If you are a professional pet stylist and have always wanted to enter the contest ring but just didn’t know what to do, this is a seminar for you!
The CPPGA will be hosting a “Novice Competition Workshop” on Sunday, June 2. Novice competitors are groomers who may be either long-time stylists or relatively new groomers who have never competed before or have just begun their competition career. They may not have had any major placements or they may have questions or apprehensions about competition. We want these people to get the right start and be comfortable in the contest ring. This is not a competition or a lesson to teach someone how to groom, but a workshop to help a potential competitor understand what happens in the contest ring and the preparation that goes into it.
This is an all-day event for everyone who attends and will be split into two sessions;
Session 1: Will begin with a seminar by contest judge, former competitor and GroomTeam USA member Teri DiMarino. Teri judges competitions around the world and will be offering her expertise in what to expect in the contest ring. Proper preparation and presentation will be reviewed along with how to read and interpret the rules, how to find and maintain your contest dogs, what to bring on the day of the contest as well as the physical and mental preparation for yourself.
Session 2: Is a hands-on contest-style workshop limited to 22 participants, but everyone who attends Session 1 stays as observers for Session 2, as this is all part of the workshop. Participating groomers will be responsible for bringing their own grooming table (portable tables are recommended), grooming equipment and dog (Please be sure to bring a crate for your dog). Dogs must be freshly bathed and fluffed as there are no bathing facilities available. * Workshop dogs only! Please leave your personal pets home.
We are pleased to have three SoCal champion groomers and CPPGA members to help mentor our workshop participants. GroomTeam USA members Amber Lewin and Cat Opson will be joined by Blake Hernandez in guiding the attendees through the contest-like setting and will be offering their input along the way. These three Champion-class competitors and are all happy to share their experience with everyone. We are pleased to have them at this event.
We will be following the WPA SuperZoo / GroomTeam USA contest rules, which are standard in the world of competition grooming. https://superzoo.org/contest-rules/
Coffee and pastries will be available in the morning and a simple lunch will be served during the break time. Bottled water will be available throughout the weekend.
Session 1 will start at 10am with Session 2 starting at about 12:30pm.
Participating Workshop groomers – CPPGA member $40, Non-member $50
Registration deadline is Friday, May 31, 2019
